Shelly Fryer
A website about an admirable woman who is a teacher in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her name is Shelly Fryer (@sfryer) and she teaches at a private non-funded elementary school called Positive Tomorrows (@ptokc). The school is for only homeless children and it is the only school like that in Oklahoma. Shelly has been teaching for 20 years and believes classroom community is everything. Her website is Shellyfryer.com and she also has a classroom website called Mrs. Fryer's Classroom. Shelly writes blogs on her website and one that stood out to me was a recent post called, “The Challenge and Opportunity.” It was talking about how important it is for her and other teachers in the school to be “trauma informed,” which she explains is, “to be sensitive and aware of the different ways students’ traumatic experiences outside of school affect them in school.” I understand why teachers at that school would definitely need to be informed, but I also think all teachers should have an understanding and knowledge of this as well. You never know what a student has gone through outside of the classroom and sometimes all teachers will experience a student who may have had a traumatic experience. Overall, Shelly Fryer is one of my top inspirational heroes of all time now.
