As I was preparing to tell a story about Kansas and its history. I began to search about Kansas history on the internet because I am from California and have only been in Kansas for three years. Since I was at a small disadvantage with no education on Kansas history I had to research it and find something that was interesting and intriguing. I stumbled on the part Kansas played in the Underground Railroad and found out about Chris Barr's cabin outside of Manhattan, KS. The cabin was discovered inside of a house that was being demolished. The cabin is believed to be a station for the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves from Missouri trying to reach Iowa or Canada.
I went to the cabin and saw how tiny it was and what was left of it. I discovered that there were newspaper scraps on the wall, and the floor seemed as if there was something under there before. I came back after taken videos and pictures and researched more about the cabin and how it played a part in the Underground Railroad. I discovered that some believed the cabin was built around 1856-1858 because the newspaper scraps were from that time period in the Kansas first newspaper called the Leavenworth Herald. I continued to be intrigued as I researched more about it. The floor did have something under there before, it was a floor trap for runaway slaves to hide during the day. This station wasn't the only station in Kansas because it is believed most of Kansas people did not agree with slaves due to their religious beliefs. Just being able to see something that played a part in the Underground Railroad made me feel more empathy than I already have before. I can't explain it in words but imagining myself in their shoes as I stood in the cabin was unreal to me. The cabin might be small but to me it is a wonderful piece of Kansas history.
I created this video using my own personal images and video captures with my camera for most of the video and found a couple of images from the web that I credited in the end of the video. I used the iMovie app to create the video and used voiceover in the app as well. I added the song from my personal music in iMovie. I found using the iMovie was just easier to work with. Overall, it was really interesting and fun creating this video on Chris Barr's Cabin.
