One Best Thing
|
This week I read a book called, One Best Thing Student-Centered eSafety: Promoting Online Safety with Creative Apps by Chris Carter. Chris Carter is an award-winning educator who has worked with schools for children with moderate to severe learning difficulties. He is currently working as an adviser for Hertz for Learning in England. One Best Thing is a collection of books actually create by Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE). Their goal is to help educators be successful in practice. Using technology successfully in the classroom is another goal for ADE.
The book itself is a great tool for all educators to help students be safe online. This book actually has apps and other resources you can use on the iPads to get students to learn about esafety. I found a lot of good resources you can incorporate throughout the year to keep students actively thinking about safety while online. The book itself was not created to be an online safety course, but rather a tool. There are several different activities created to go along with the apps it introduces. I really love one in particular called, Puppet Pals. I loved it so much I created one for fun just to try it out. This specific app is an animation tool you can create or you can have students create their own on esafety. The students simply pick characters and background for their story. They then can move the puppet around and talk into a recorder to tell the story all in real time. Of course the app is also free but has a paid version for more access. The book has many other apps it suggests along with activities to promote esafety through the student’s perspective. A really good read before you go and teach an online safety lesson to students to better understand ways you can reinforce esafety throughout the year. |
